MARGAO: Cautioning the municipal staff against concentrating only on receiving salaries without performing their duties, Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Lyndon Pereira on Saturday asked the employees to work sincerely or face action.
Nearly 200 MMC workers were paraded in front of the council head on Saturday following serious complaints from councillors that several employees were receiving salaries without work. Several workers were exposed on Saturday as they were found signing the muster roll without performing their duties.
Vice-chairperson Dipali Saval and municipal engineer Diniz were also present during the parade session. The chairperson, supervisors and the concerned officers took up the task of looking after the workers’ attendance. Sanitary Inspector Viraj Arabekar admitted that many workers mostly engaged as sweepers return home early.
Viraj urged the chairperson to streamline the functioning and monitoring of the working system of the employees with proper planning. He brought to the notice of the civic body the difficulties faced due to the shortage of LDC staff.
Speaking to media persons, Lyndon Pereira said the civic body will conduct investigation with regards to the workers drawing full salary without performing their duties as mostly those signing the muster roll are not seen performing their duties.
“There were allegations from few councillors that many daily wage workers enjoy full salaries without performing their duties. Hence, today we conducted a parade of all the workers from all the sections, including sanitary, road gang, garbage, and others, to warn them that without performing their duties they will not get their salaries”, he said.
The chairperson said the daily wage workers have to report for work on Saturdays, however, it was noticed that many sign the muster roll but are not seen in the municipality performing their duties.
“I have instructed the supervisors to provide all the details of the workers shying away from performing their duties, despite signing the muster roll, and henceforth we will not tolerate such issues”, warned Lyndon.
He said the officials will conduct surprise visits to the municipality on Saturdays to ascertain the facts, and in case any worker is not found performing his/her duty despite signing the muster roll, strict action will be initiated against the concerned worker.
Sanguem PWD staff in ‘relaxation’ mode!
SANGUEM: The employees of the works Division II, Division XX PWD Office, Sanguem appear to be in “relaxation” mode as the taluka residents claim that most staffers leave their workplace way too early.
It may be recalled that the government had exempted its employees from marking attendance using biometric system due to the prevailing COVID pandemic.
However, later the government in a circular lifted the relaxations.
The residents complained that the employees leave the office after 3 pm to proceed to their homes.
When questioned on the employees leaving the office early, Executive Engineer Shrikant Gaonkar said some officers have proceeded on BLO duty. However Gaonkar could not provide details on the whereabouts of the other staffers.
“Most staff members attached to the PWD office at Sanguem are on contract basis and are taking undue advantage of leaving the office early, claimed a Sanguem resident.
“If these workers are not interested in performing their duties then the government should terminate their services and appoint those who are in need of jobs,” the resident added.
It is pertinent to note that the government has fixed biometric devices in all its offices to keep a track of the movement of its staff. However, the PWD office at Sanguem has failed to install the device.
AE Gaonkar informed that the biometric device will be installed soon.
The residents claimed that on Friday, nearly 75 per cent of the office staffers had left their workplace early. The head of the department and a few devoted employees were seen performing their duties.
