Workers threaten to go on ‘fast unto death’ strike

PANJIM: As the protest enters the seventh day, agitating workers attached with the Goa Recruitment and Employment Society (GRES) have set a 24-hour deadline before the government to fulfill their demand of regularizing their services, failing which they have threatened to go on a ‘fast unto death’ strike from December 9.

Workers employed with various government departments on contract basis are on an indefinite hunger strike since December 1 pressing for their demands. Ignoring appeals made by the GRES to resume work, they have intensified their stir in the State capital.
Union leader Ajitsingh Rane said that the 3-day deadline given to the government to fulfill the demands ended today  and the government authorities failed to respond to the grievances.
“We have extended the deadline by one more day, wherein a fresh representation would be made to the Chief Minister, Council of Ministers and MLAs,” he said and added that if there is no response, workers will go on ‘fast unto death’ strike from Tuesday.
The workers have also called for an all party, all religious and all section public meeting on December 9, with an effort to reach out to the people at large with their demands and exposing the face of BJP-led government.
This will be followed by corner meetings across the State, Rane said. “We are open for any discussion and to call off our strike provided there is a written assurance from the government that our workers would be regularized in a phased manner and our other demands would be also looked into,” he said.
GRES is a government undertaking that employs and provides contract workers to various government departments. The union has contractual workers employed by the society.
