MARGAO: Dismissing allegations that the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has recommended no developmental works for the last two years, Chairperson Dr Babita Prabhudessai said works worth around Rs 6 crore have been sanctioned and half of which have been completed.
Speaking to media, she said works worth a little over Rs 3 crore were completed last year, which were recommended soon after the council was formed in November 2015. “Somewhere early 2016 we sent our recommendations, which were sanctioned and hence we completed works worth around Rs 12 lakh in each ward last year,” she said.
She disclosed that as they had also prepared a list of works worth around Rs 3 crore last year, which were sanctioned and the tenders for the same will be invited shortly.
“As we have to go for e-tender it is taking a little time as the typing work is extensive in e-tendering,” she said.
She said works worth Rs 3 crore have been completed which include covering the drains with slabs or constructing drains in Gogol or preparing footpaths where required.
Besides she pointed out that the council had undertaken works on urgent basis such as repairs of drains, toilets as and where required and added that works worth nearly Rs 1 crore were undertaken and that each councillor was allotted around Rs 8 lakh for specific works in their wards as an additional grant of Rs 1 crore was given to the council.
She dismissed the charge that the council has been a total failure and there has been no development whatsoever. She said for nearly three years before they took over there was no development work at all in Margao.
