World TB Day celebrated at Valpoi

VALPOI: Community Health Centre (CHC) Valpoi celebrated World TB Day at Unity High School Valpoi, with the theme ‘Reach the 3 Million. Find, Treat, Cure’.
Valpoi Municipal Council (VMC) Vice Chairperson Shaizin Shaikh was the chief guest for the function.
CHC Valpoi medical counsellor Aqueeb Shaikh stated that World TB Day, which falls on March 24, is specifically celebrated to build public awareness among the people about global epidemic of tuberculosis and to make efforts to eliminate the disease.
“No one should be left behind in the fight against TB if we want to move towards a zero TB deaths. For World TB Day 2014, we should all come together to find, treat and cure all people with TB and to make India with zero TB deaths, stigma and infections,” Aqueeb added.
Aqueeb urged the students to spread the message to eradicate TB and requested them to check their sputum if they are getting any TB suspected symptoms.
Nodal Medical Officer for TB Dr Abhijit Wadkar explained the students about what is TB, how it is spread and what to do for not getting infected. He also explained about the TB medicine (DOTS) and Multi Drug Resistance TB.
He also highlighted about global, Indian, Goa’s as well as Sattari numbers of TB positive patients and said Tuberculosis is now a notifiable disease and every private doctor treating TB patients has to report to the Health department about the patients so that accurate number of TB patients is available.
Senior Medical Officer Dr Sham Canconkar spoke on students’ hygiene and nutrition.
Dr Vaibhav Gadgil also spoke on the occasion. School PTA secretary Firoza Sayed, acting headmistress, Parveen Saudager and staff attended the function.
