VASCO: The Velsao lake was desilted by the Water Resources Department (WRD) after two decades.
Cortalim MLA Anton Vas and members of Pale Tole Xetkaranche Association (PTXA) were present at the occasion. Vas said that the PTXA members had approached him with a request to desilt the Velsao lake, as it was not desilted for a long time due to which farmers were facing difficulties.
He said that even during Ganesh immersion, people also faced problems due to less water in the lake and there were incidents of Ganesh idols floating after immersion.
He said that desilting will help farmers who cultivate their fields and mostly grow brinjals. He said that the work of desilting of major nulla at Cansualim, situated near the village panchayat has commenced as it was causing flooding during monsoon.
PTXA President Roquezinho D’Souza recalled that the lake was desilted nearly 20 years ago during the term of then Minister Matanhy Saldanha. He said that farmers were facing problems and during auctioning villagers were complaining of siltation in the lake.
Cansaulim-Arossim-Cuelim Sarpanch Savio Pereira said the villagers had requested the panchayat to undertake the desilting of nulla from Cansualim market up to the Velsao lake to avoid flooding during monsoon.
He pointed out that in the past even water had entered the panchayat off ice and damaged documents and office files.
