MAPUSA: Water Resources Department (WRD) Minister Subhash Shirodkar along with Aldona MLA Carlos Alvares Ferreira inspected the water bodies in Aldona Constituency including Coimavaddo, St Thomas Church, Shree Sateri Bhagwati Temple, two ponds, a lake at Pomburpa, bundh at Panarim, pond and nallah at Ucassaim, water hyacinth at Moira and the Tar Bridge.
“This inspection is part of the initiative for promoting agricultural activities. Apart from being a Ganesh visarjan site, the water from the pond at Hatalwaddo, Podwal at Corjuem is used for cultivating vegetables. The water table is high as the river flows nearby. We will undertake a clean-up and beautification by April-May next year and if we get an NOC from the land owner then we can also create a sitting arrangement and small walkway for people,” Shirodkar said.
Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira urged citizens to maintain cleanliness and stop dumping of garbage in the open and water bodies.
“People indiscriminately dump garbage by the roadside. They fling bags of waste from buses and vehicles from the bridge into the river. If the river gets polluted then we will be exposed to sickness. We keep our houses clean, but throw waste outside,” Ferreira said.
