PANJIM: Water Resource Department (WRD) will be taking up construction of 200 Bandharas worth Rs 5 lakh each in the State by involving local farmers.
WRD Minister Vinod Palyekar told Herald that the chief minister had, in principal, approved the idea of re-launching the government scheme of “Adva Paani, Jirva Paani.”
Besides farmers, the self-help groups and other residents will also be involved, he added.
“Earlier, we gave contracts to contractors. However, now we are of the view that farmers and self help groups should construct their own bandharas. I have discussed the proposal with the CM,” he said.
CM had announced last month that 300 to 400 bandharas will be built on various rivers across the State to address the water woes of the state during summers.
He added that the file has been placed before the CM for approval and once that is cleared, the tendering process will begin shortly thereafter.
