MARGAO: Prominent writers in Goa condemned the thought process that believes in eliminating a person for his ideology and appealed to these forces to instead convince the people about their ideology.
Pointing out that India is the largest democracy in the world where freedom of speech is enshrined in the Constitution, writer Chetan Acharya said Mauzo is a known rational writer highlighting evils in society. “The fact that the governments at the Centre and in the State have failed to curb this assassination mentality indicates that they tacitly support it,” Acharya said, asserting that the mentality of assassination has to be condemned.
Fausto V da Costa a Konkani writer, said there is a difference between Gauri Lankesh who was a journalist and Mauzo who is a creative writer, writing against the evils in the society. “Probably the divisive forces in the country did not like his attempts to bring all communities together and therefore wanted to create a disturbance,” he said.
Adv Surel Tilve, another writer, said that Mauzo is a humble person in his writing as well as an individual. “The people who want to suppress his voice should instead come with good literature espousing their mentality instead of seeking to suppress a view,” he said while repeating Damodar’s statement that one can kill a person but not his thought.
“We live in harmony in Goa and such acts are not welcome here,” he added, reiterating that instead of killing they should come with sound reasoning for their logic.
