MARGAO: In December 2023, the Colva Traffic Cell took stringent action against drunk driving, booking 29 drivers for driving under the influence. Police Sub-Inspector Deu Mangaonker reported that the year 2023 saw a total of 199 drivers booked for drunk driving by the Colva Traffic Cell.
Mangaonker mentioned that the traffic cell is equipped with two breathalyzers for alcohol breath testing. Initial alcohol impairment tests are conducted roadside using a screening device, and if positive, evidential breath testing is performed at the police station.
A senior police officer said that motorists can be stopped for a breath test if suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, especially after a road traffic accident or if they commit a moving traffic offence.
Sources from the Colva Traffic Cell highlighted their ongoing campaign against drunk driving, assuring that those driving under the influence of alcohol will face consequences.
In addition to tackling drunk driving, the Colva Traffic Cell addressed various other offences, such as driving without a licence, seat belt and helmet violations, and permit issues. Beyond enforcement, the traffic cell has been actively engaged in educational efforts, visiting educational institutions to impart knowledge about traffic rules, regulations, and safety measures.
