MARGAO: In response to the recent scuffle over parking fees at Margao Railway station, the Konkan Railway Corporation has issued directives to the contractor, instructing him to immediately cease collecting parking fees, signalling a temporary halt to the contentious practice.
Baban Ghatge, a senior official of Konkan Railways, clarified that the concerned contractor has not sublet the work, and therefore, there is no issue pertaining to the termination of the contractor.
On Monday, a taxi driver was allegedly assaulted by staff of the pay parking contractor at the Railway Station. The dispute arose when the taxi driver contested being charged for exceeding a purported 10-minute limit within the station’s parking area.
The disagreement escalated as the taxi driver objected to the charges imposed for what he claimed was an unjustified duration spent in the parking zone.
“We have not yet re-started the pay parking system, which is applicable for vehicles stationed at the Konkan railway station for more than 10 minutes. The system is yet to be put in place. Konkan Railways has not given any permission to the concerned contractor to collect fees just for entering the railway station,” said Ghatge, adding that the contractor has been asked to stop collecting fees until further notice .
