MARGAO: While scrap yards in residential localities pose risks and health hazards to inhabitants, the Goa Waste (Scrap) Re-cycling Scheme 2010 is awaiting implementation till date, with the authorities yet to set up “trade zones” mooted under the scheme.
When Herald contacted the IDC Managing Director, F O Hasmi, whether the Corporation has made any headway in setting up the trade zones to house scrap yards, he said many issues still remains unresolved till date. “Though it has been decided to set up 2-3 trade zones to house the scrap yards, nothing concrete has been finalized till date. We are also in the process of taking a decision whether to set up the trade zones in the existing industrial estates or to acquire additional land to house these zones,” he said.
Replying to a question on the fate of the Goa Waste (Scrap) Re-Cycling scheme, Hasmi said, “Something concrete may materialize within the next 15-20 days.”
Interestingly, while most of the scrap yards located across the state are illegal in nature, the authorities have till date not removed or shifting them on grounds that they will be rehabilitated under the Goa Waste (Scrap) Re-Cycling Scheme 2010.
