MARGAO: A law and order situation developed over an alleged assault by four youth on the assistant parish priest attached to Carmona Church on Monday. However, the reason for the assault is not known, the police said.
Following the incident, a large number of people, including parishioners, assembled in front of church late Monday evening.
On getting the information, Colva police rushed to the spot and arrested all the accused. Sensing a law and order problem, policemen were deployed in the area even as the situation was under control.
Margao sub-divisional police officer Harish Madkaikar was present at the spot along with his staff.
DySP Madkaikar tried to pacify the agitated villagers stating that the police have arrested all the four assailants and that stern action will be taken against them. However, the villagers demanded that the assailants be brought to the Church and be asked to apologise to the assistant parish priest. They also demanded that the accused be not allowed to enter in the church premises.
The villagers were also annoyed over the absence of the parish priest. However, South Goa Episcopal Vicar Fr Lucio Dias, who was also present at Carmona, pacified the villagers assuring them that he will take up the matter before the Archbishop on Tuesday.
Following an assurance by Fr Dias and the police, the villagers dispersed at around midnight.
