Youth attempts suicide at Sinquerim, rescued

CALANGUTE: Alert Drishti lifesavers foiled a suicide bid by a 25-year-old youth at Sinquerim beach.

The lifesavers on duty at the beach noticed a male entering the waters and heading straight into the sea. Soon he appeared to be in distress.

The lifesavers then called for backup and rushed into the waters. Lifesavers Nakul and Yeshwant on a jet-ski rushed to assist with the rescue operation.

A lifesaver held onto the youth to keep him afloat. However, the male got aggressive. When Nakul and Yeshwant arrived on the jetski, the trio tied to get him onto the rescue board. However, the youth refused to cooperate and told the lifesavers that he wanted to end his life. The youth appeared mentally disturbed as he was disoriented and incoherent in his speech. The lifesavers managed to put a life jacket to keep him afloat. They eventually managed to bring him ashore.

When the police were called, the disturbed youth got aggressive with them as well.

The youth, who was stung by a jellyfish, was administered first aid and later shifted to the Candolim Primary Health Centre.
