CALANGUTE: Campaigning for the Calangute ZP polls has reached a feverish pitch with all the six candidates making all out efforts to win over the electorate of Calangute, Candolim and Arpora-Nagoa.
All the candidates are on door-to-door campaign besides making loudspeaker announcements, social media networks and SMSes, while few candidates have adopted musical audio messages to win the votes of Calangute, Candolim and Arpora-Nagoa electorate.
With the exception of Shawn Martins, a young and a new face in the political field, all the other candidates contesting the Calangute ZP polls are seasoned politicians. Though Martins is a novice in politics, he has the support of Calangute MLA Michael Lobo.
Lobo along with BJP workers and Calangute youth are campaigning for the success of Martins, who is contesting the election on BJP symbol.
The BJP candidate is facing a tough contest from Ramkrishna Kerkar, popularly called Baba a resident of Saipem-Candolim, and a active member of Congress Party.
Kerkar is a former Candolim panch and is backed by former Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes.
Savio Gonsalves, panch and former Calangute deputy sarpanch, is another hot contender for the Calangute ZP seat and is backed by Joseph Sequeira, who is leaving no stone unturned to garner support for Gonsalves in the villages of Arpora-Nagoa, Candolim and Calangute.
Three other independent candidates, Ashley Gomes, Laxman Porob Palyekar and Mahesh Korgaonkar, are also working overtime to get elected.
Gomes is a motor sports promoter of Calangute and is banking on his good work in sports and field of education, while Laxman Porob Palyekar and Mahesh Korgaonkar are former sarpanchas of Calangute and Arpora-Nagoa Panchayats. They are banking on their development as sarpanchas and support of their spouses Geeta Laxman Porob and Mahima Mahesh Korgaonkar for their win at ZP polls.
