PANJIM: Two days after its inauguration by Union Minister (MoRTH) for Roads and Highway Transport Nitin Gadkari, the second phase of cable-stayed Zuari Bridge was opened for vehicular traffic on Sunday.
The second phase of the iconic bridge was inaugurated on December 22, 20, while the first phase of the bridge was also opened by Gadkari on December 29 last year.
The bridge has been constructed at a cost of nearly Rs 1,500 crore. With the opening of the second four-lane section of the bridge for traffic, the travel time between North Goa and South Goa is likely to be reduced by almost 30 minutes.
The work for the eight-lane cable-stayed bridge and its approach roads had started in October 2016. However, the work moved at slow pace due to the Covid-19 pandemic which affected supply of material and labour.
Till Saturday, the first four-lane section was open for travel from South Goa to North Goa and closed for use in the opposite direction.
