VASCO: Commuting along the Zuari Bridge stretch these days has proved to be a nightmare for several travellers. And Thursday too was no different as commuters were yet again stuck in the traffic jam for almost an hour on Thursday as tree branch came crashing down on the road near the temple – the starting point of the bridge, at around 4 pm.
However, traffic policemen said that a couple escaped with minor injuries as the tree fell on the bike and the tree blockade left several vehicles especially tourist cabs and heavy vehicles stranded.
The police manning the traffic informed that at around 4 pm a tree branch came crashing down on a motorcycle and later fell on the road near Maruti temple- the starting point of the bridge.
Traffic police further informed that the couple on the bike, who escaped with minor injuries, were sent to GMC for treatment. Immediately, the fire fighting team arrived at the spot and cleared the tree branch in half-an-hour.
Gautam Nagshetty, a tourist, missed both flights to Bengaluru scheduled at 5.30 pm and 6.30 pm respectively. He said due to the traffic jam he would have to shell out around Rs 7,000 to buy new flight ticket to Bengaluru which is likely to take off at night.
Meanwhile, those commuting from Agassaim side informed that there was fire in the fields along the Goa Velha bypass which further added to traffic jam at Verna, Sancoale, Cortalim and Agassaim.
A commuter while travelling on his two-wheeler from Margao to Panjim complained of getting stuck for over an hour from 5.45 pm to 7.15 pm. Traffic on Verna plateau and Siridao was blocked on both sides. And to add to it, there was a fire in the fields, wherein the firemen engaged in the fire fighting operation further caused a bottleneck along the narrow stretch of the Goa Velha bypass.
