A tribute to Saint Teresa

Edwin D’Costa’s 89th audio CD ‘Life of Sant Mother Teresa’, dedicated to late Simon D’Costa, has narration and 14 songs related to the saint, known as the ‘saint of the gutters’.

The title song, ‘Saint Mother Teresa’ by Mauxin, speaks about the life and works of Mother Teresa. He further mentions that she was declared a living saint much before her sainthood for her exemplary life and extraordinary deeds.
The narration speaks of her role as a teacher who toiled hard to impart good education to the less fortunate. The song, ‘Bori Teacher’ by Anthony de Nuvem’, speaks about the love and dedication that is expected from a teacher towards her students, after provision of good facilities and a decent salary. A teacher should realise that he/she is a second parent to her students in the classroom, he concludes.
The narrator highlights the role of Mother Teresa towards the abandoned children and the song ‘Bhurgeanchi Seva’ by Nazario Pinto speaks about the selfless love and affection she had for the street children. The next song, ‘Naslelem Tedna’ by Nacia and Jose Mascarenhas, deals with the same issue.
Before the song ‘Rosteavele Bhikari’ by Pascoal de Calangute, the narrator throws light on incidents wherein Mother Teresa cared for the people on the streets. The beggars lived a wrecked life but passed away like kings, the singer mentions.
‘Abortion Ek Crim’ and ‘Cheddvam Rostiar’, by Jose Mascarenhas and Edwin D’Costa respectively, dwell upon the sensitive issue of abortion and unwed mothers. The narrator reveals that Mother Teresa took care of the abandoned girl child and gave them shelter in her orphanages. Many among them found a good match and lived happy married lives thereafter, the singer concludes.
‘Duddvancho Gulam’ a song by F X Pinto, speaks of a beggar who was covered with maggots and picked up from the street. He refused to part with his old clothes as he had cash on him, reveals the narrator.
‘Avoi Zababdari’ by Jose Mascarenhas speaks about the responsibility of the mother towards her children at home. The concluding narration and songs dwell upon the death and funeral of Mother Teresa, besides her work at different centres across the globe, criticisms and opposition.
Edwin D’Costa’s efforts to introduce narration before every song, thus providing the listener iwth the life sketch of Mother Teresa need to be commended. A special mention has to be made about noted personalities like Princess Diana, sports personalities Navjot Singh Sidhu and Kapil Dev providing an insight about Mother Teresa’s ties with them.
Instead of the brief songs after the narration, full-length songs based on varied themes would have had a stronger impact. Lyrics and dialogues have been worked upon by Edwin D’Costa.
