CUNCOLIM: Voting in Cuncolim passed off peacefully as 75.35 per cent voters exercised their franchise on Saturday.
Of 14544 voters in 14 wards of Cuncolim Municipal Council (CMC), 11104 cast their votes. Of these, 5047 were males and 6057 females.
Voting was slow during the morning session, with only 16 per cent voters exercising their franchise. However, voting gained momentum in the afternoon.
As per ward-wise voting, 726 persons exercised their franchised in ward 1, 761 in ward 2, 691 in ward 3, 954 in ward 4, 778 in ward 5, 726 in ward 6, 963 in ward 7, 943 in ward 8, 992 in ward 9, 767 ward 10, 789 in ward 11, 799 in ward 12, 625 in ward 13 and 726 in ward 14.
No untoward incident took place at any of the booths. There were queues at some polling stations since morning.
State Chief Election Commissioner W V Ramanamurthy visited the polling booths in Cuncolim and took stock of the situation. South SP Pankaj Kumar also was seen at the booths.
The CMC election is seen as a battle between Yuri Alemao’s group and pro-BJP group.
MLA Clafasio Dias and BJP panel chief Videsh Desai are confident of their group’s victory. Speaking to reporters, Dias said they would win in 10 wards.
