When we talk about clothes, the first image that comes to our mind is buying attires online, from malls or any designer. But with this image, what we are losing is our traditional tailoring and clothing style.
With the fast moving time, people are more career oriented and prefer jobs and forget pursuing the skills that they have such as tailoring, singing, painting and more.
Tailoring not only includes stitching designer clothes, but also other things such as embroidered clothes, embroidery or woollen items, cross stitching and more. Today, however, hardly few people are into it.
In Hindu culture there is a tradition where the new bride takes embroidered clothes, table overs, show pieces made up of oven wool, decorative show prices and more things to her new house which she further displays to the family and relatives. This is a tradition through which the girl displays the skills that she pursues.
However, in today’s world, not many people follow this tradition and those who do, it is all about buying things online or finding readymade stuff from the store.
Sanjay Satoskar, a 47-year-old, and a local of Mandrem is making it his point that people take interest in the art of tailoring so that it does not fade away.
Turning his interest into profession and further into a full-fledged business, Sanjay Satoskar is one of the top best tailors in whole of Pernem Taluka. Taking a liking for tailoring, he took to his passion when he was just 10. Now it is 25 years, a sort of silver jubilee, for him in tailoring.
Speaking to Herald, Sanjay Satoskar said “I started my first work earning Rs 100 and now I own a full-fledged business. When I started, no one supported me, either financially or mentally. On the contrary people use to say the profession I chose is for ladies. But since I had a deep interest in tailoring, I took it up”.
Satoskar makes embroidered designs on clothes such as sarees, paithanis, lehengas, sherwani, Maharashtrian Dhoti; Cross stitching, table covers with embroidery and thread designs, house decorating items, door hangings, decorative show pieces, etc.
Satoskar said, “This is an art and not everyone is blessed with such skills,” says Satoskar. “I am thankful to God that he blessed me with these skills.”
Without any technical knowledge or course, Satoskar has turned to be one of the best tailors in whole Pernem Taluka. His skills are not only bordered to Pernem or Mandrem, but people from distance places such as Vasco, Margao and even out of the State like Maharashtra and Karnataka make it a point to give their orders to Satoskar.
Satoskar requires minimum two hours to maximum two days to finish one item with proper patience and interest. Along with Hindus, people from other religions also prefer giving orders to Satoskar for weddings and other occasions.
Along with him, his wife Sampada Satoskar and his children also help him in this work. “Right now my children are studying but they have always shown interest in this work. In future if they do not gout looking for other jobs, they will definitely take this business forward,” says Satoskar.
Satoskar also turns waste into use wherein if any extra cloth or thread remains he uses everything to create an item.
“Today’s youth have completely lost their interest in such activities. They are more into finding jobs, especially government offices. It’s not possible for everyone to find a government job. But instead of running behind jobs, they should pursue their own interest and take it has their career. Not only tailoring but it can be singing, dancing, painting or any other hobby,” he ended advising youth.
