Dr Emanuel Gracias while studying laparoscopy in Germany came across a complex technology. He had planned to add it to his maternity hospital and infertility centre but the process was very expensive. Dr Emanuel Gracias who now works with embryologist Kapil Pai Raiturkar came across the Magnetic Assisted Cell Separation technology that could help men determine the weaker sperm and pick the best possible ones for fertility.
“Basically, MACS is perfect for seafarers in Goa, who have a huge difficulty with infertility and that’s when I thought this technology was apt to bring to Goa,” explains Emanuel, who was eager to explain to us the ray of hope that MACS has brought to families especially seafarer men and their wives.
“In MACS. the sperms are labelled with iron substances and the weaker sperms absorb the iron and are attracted towards the MACS while the stronger sperm are not taken up by the magnet and we use those for fertility through IVF,” asserts Emanuel.
Emanuel and Kapil found success in just their third attempt and have successfully had two patients deliver healthy babies.
“Currently, MACS is very expensive. We’re absorbing the costs ourselves as long as we can and not transferring the burden on to the patients. We plan to do this as long as we can only to bring such an advanced technology to Goa, till people understand the use of MACS in birth assistance,” explains Dr Emanuel.
A gynaecologist by profession and a second generation doctor who runs his family’s 70-year-old hospital, Dr Emanuel after studying across Germany and Paris and in many other parts of the world has introduced many life changing technologies and innovations in his sphere (gynae) and is ably assisted by kapil, a well-known embryologist in Goa.
Kapil and Emanuel hope MACS will be an answer to all those couples who are fighting infertility.
