In a first of its kind, Goa police releases a drug peddlers list. VIBHA VERMA gets the inside ‘dope’

A total of 125 drug peddlers have been mentioned in the list of Anti-Narcotic Cell of Goa Police. This is the first time, Goa Police have released the drug peddlers list in the form of a booklet and distributed to its coastal counterpart and all heads of the police stations and sub- division heads.
In 2011, the then opposition party which is ruling the state now had blamed the ruling Congress for not having a prepared a list of drug peddlers list with them.
Goa has been getting a bad name due to the drug menace especially in the coastal belt of Goa and had to face shame due to links of Goa police officers with drug mafias on the Goa’s northern coast.
Out of total catch in different NDPS raids by ANC in the last five years, 40% of the total numbers of accused are foreigners, rest all are Indian nationals.
This state is largely attracted by the foreign tourists, few of them come (in the coastal region) here to operate the drug trade. Foreign nationals contribute 40% of the accused in last five years, total accused are found from 18 different nations. The majority of the accused are from Nigerians, followed by Nepalis and Israelis, French and Russians.
Once upon a time in Goa the entire drug cartel was controlled by Russians and later the Israelis. The time has changed now and the majority of the drug portion is handled by Nigerians.
Foreign nationals are mainly found with all the synthetic drugs including Cocaine, LSD etc. but Nepalis are mostly found with Charas and Ganja.
The big fight between local and foreign drug dealers have come to light after the murder of a Nigerian national in Parra which was allegedly carried out by a local drug gang from Chapora.
The incident which happened two years back. Investigation later revealed that the entire war was due to the drug jurisdiction and the subsequent tresspassing. The State has also been embarrassed due to drugs when Goa Police officers were allegedly found involved in the trade.
