Valuable addition to Konkani Language

The recently published book of Dr. Vaman Naik titled ‘English-Konkani-Synonyms and Antonyms Dictionary’ has received rave reviews for its depth, quality and the fact that it serves as a useful tool to readers and has much needed information, which through his writings, is easy to grasp. Here is one such review by Dr FREDDY FERNANDES

Principal Dr. Vaman Naik needs to be complimented for the recent release of his book “English-Konkani-Synonyms and Antonyms Dictionary”, which was released recently at the hands of Raju Naik, Editor, Lokmat, and presided over by Suresh Amonkar, Chairman Konkani Academy amongst others. Till now several Konkani dictionaries has been published. But this one is more important at it is a dictionary as well as thesaurus. The work is done in a simplified way considering the interest of the readers.
Dr. Naik said that as a student of a school and initial years of college education, he used to refer a dictionary of synonyms and antonyms in English, which helped him to improve his writing skills and know the meaning of basic words in English. This encouraged him to bring out a dictionary in Konkani.
Much larger dictionaries and thesaurus are available but they often confuse the user by providing a long list of complicated and often rare words.
A thesaurus gives a long list of synonyms for a word, which can be very helpful to find a suitable word with similar meaning in writing. In writing, especially creative writing, repeating same words numerous times, can make writing dull or uninteresting. Replacing a word with an equivalent one, can improve the way communicate your ideas. The use of synonyms also helps to make your writing more vivid. If you are looking for ways to improve upon your writing skills, start by learning new synonyms. The correct use of synonyms can transform your writing from boring to exciting or from repetitive to imaginative.
The specialty of this dictionary is that it gives several words which have similar meanings and opposites both in the English and Konkani.
This dictionary the first of its kind; will help English-Konkani translators students, teachers, readers, librarians, those answering competitive exams and all those who love and use words. It is an easy reference book.
It is over 25 years that Konkani has been granted the status of official language. Hence it is but natural that it enters new areas, such as developing Social Sciences, Economics, Commerce, Management, Office Procedures, and Computers etc.
The richness of a language depends on the nature and types of dictionaries that have been published. A well developed language like Marathi has several dictionaries in the field of Medicine, Management, Architecture, Designing, Music, Arms and Emanation, botany, Religions, Aesthetics, Music etc.
This dictionary thus, is a valuable guide for anyone wanting to build their vocabulary and improve their writing skills over seven thousands alternatives and opposite words are given, which are used most frequently synonyms, real life examples of usage to pin point the relevant words quickly and easily.
Since Konkani is the official language it has to develop on new lines like developing social sciences, translating classical works into language, developing technical terminology, translating relevant laws into language and make it feasible to use it for all official purpose however this has not received the adequate attention of the Konkani protagonists.
