PANJIM: After taking a keen look on the first four disciplines, on Thursday, Herald continues its series in which we will analyze the remaining eight disciplines which Goa took part, at the recently conclude 35th National Games, in Kerala.
Today, we look into the performances of boxing, aquatics, triathlon and rifle shooting. The disciplines had a total of 29 athletes and managed only two bronze and one silver medal.
Boxing: There were five men and two women representing Goa. They took part in 12 matches, winning six and losing the rest. But the one name that made a mark for him self was Vishwanath Naik, who clinched a bronze medal in the bantam 56kg category.
Santosh Harijan and Sunita Yadav also had bright chances to make it to the semi-finals but could not get better of their opponents.
Aquatics: There were high hopes in aquatics which included swimming and diving. With the likes of international swimmer Talasha Prabhu in the Goan team, a bronze was certainly assured.
Talasha, who was the flag bearer for the State at the opening ceremony, settled for the third place in the 100m freestyle event with a timing of 1:00:13 seconds. After resisting serious competition from the Goan girl, Haryana’s Shivani Katria clinched the gold medal with a timing of 58.34 seconds and the silver went to Maharashtra’s Aditi Dhumatkar (59:34).
There were 11 other swimmers from Goa, but none could make a mark. Moreover, in diving, Goa’s young promising stars Aalhad Chati and Genevieve D’Costa could not secure a podium finish.
Rifle Shooting: Yash Padloskar, Bhageshree Padloskar and Atul Nakhare were the only three Goans taking part in this event which had tough competitions from over 400 other participants in 39 different categories.
Triathlon: Goa’s triathlon team of Mani Singh, Bishworjit Singh and Dhiraj did the State proud by securing its first silver medal. SSCB were the dominant force in men’s triathlon, walking away with both the individual as well as the team gold medals. Minachandra won the individual gold before teaming up with Dilip and Gurudatt to finish on top in the team competition. The individual silver and bronze went to Dilip and Manipur’s Mahesh respectively.
