PANJIM: The 8th all-Goa Tribal Sports Festival will be held on May 11 and 12 at Ponda sports complex, Ponda and Karai ground, Shiroda.
It will be held in volleyball, kabaddi, kho-kho, tennis ball cricket, lagori, langadi and tug-of-war, stated Sports Minister Govind Gaude.
“In such festivals, the tribal community gets opportunities to test their skill and talent. Most often it is noticed that raw talent from rural areas, hinterlands miss out on a general platform. The festival endeavours to provide them a special platform to explore their potential and give them sustained motivation. Our tribal players have excelled across various sports events at national and international levels, ” commented Gaude and added that a national tribal sports event is in the offing in 2024.
A total of 1776 players from 12 talukas and 659 technical officials will participate. The total prize money is Rs 3,55,000 including cash for winners, runners-up and individual prizes.
Seven tribal sportspersons will be felicitated namely – Rowlin Borges (football), Ankita Gaude (baseball), Deepak Gaonkar (kho-kho), Deepesh Jalmi (mallakhamb), Nitin Sawant (volleyball), Sarvesh Gaude (tennis ball cricket), Sahish M. Gaude (kabaddi).
SAG’s ED, Dr Geeta Nagvenkar; Director of Coaching, Bruno Coutinho; Assistant Director, Navin Acharya were among those present at the press briefing at Bambolim on Friday.
The logo ‘Eagle’ was unveiled by the Sports Minister.
