Akhilesh Desai, a Std VIII student of New Goa High School (GS Amonkar Vidya Mandir), Mapusa won a bronze medal at Rope Skipping World Cup at Loughborough in England recently. Akhilesh was the only Goan to participate in the event.
In all, Indian skippers won six bronze – Akhilesh Rajkumar Desai (Goa), Suraj Pande (UP), Shivam Kanngi (Maharashtra), Omkar Pande (Maharashtra), Pritvi Patel (Gujarat) and Hit Patel (Gujarat). This is the first time that the Indian team participated in the championship.
Akhilesh has been a very prominent Goan player having represented the State six times at the National level and has bagged nine gold, ten silver and four bronze medals. The 13- year-old has proved his skills in pairs double dutch speed, jogging steps and triple enduaers which are considered to be his speciality among different skills.
Akhilesh was initially guided by Kirti Sawaikar, teacher from Vidya Prabodini School, Porvorim and further training was provided by Arshad Aahamad, technical director, JRFI.
The Indian team headed by Sunita Joshi, secretary general of Jump Rope Federation of India arrived in Delhi on Saturday. The team was welcomed by Shripad Naik, MP, Rajkumar Desai, treasurer of JRFI, Arshad Aahamad, technical director of JRFI and other JRFI dignitaries.
Shripad Naik congratulated the players for winning bronze medals for the country. The Goa Rope Skipping Association has congratulated Akhilesh for winning the bronze.
