All-India volleyball tourney at Curtorim

The 2nd All-India volleyball tournament organised by Wilred Leisure Sports Club in association with Sports Authority of Goa, under the aegis of Volleyball Federation of India and Goa Volleyball Association, will be held from April 10 to 18 at St Alex church ground, Curtorim.

Goa has been given a chance to prove their mettle with the Goa Volleyball Association (GVA) asked to select both the men’s and women’s teams.
After the 2-day trials in which players turned up, the absence of Goa’s best – Jit Arolkar, Milind Bhodke, Pappu, Rupesh, Pawar, Vijay and others from the State team – was felt and it is inconceivable to picture Goa without the stalwarts, because as it is Goa’s standard is not high.
No women player turned up for the trials, which would be a great setback for the event. However, the organizers intend to contact the girls directly, since they did not respond to GVA’s call. Wilred Leisure are confident that the women’s team would be fielded as there are players who are practicing regularly and want to play in the tournament.
The organizers, who were responsible to inject some life in Goa’s moribund volleyball last year, found it strange that the response has been lukewarm even when the GVA is seeking a big royalty, which is almost three times more than what the VFI charges at Rs 5,000.
