MARGAO: Pope John XXIII HS, Quepem trounced Our Lady of Health HS, Cuncolim 6-1 to romp into the semi-finals of Fr Peter SVD memorial football tournament organized by SVD at SVD Seminary ground, Raia, Friday.
In a total domination, Pope John got off to a flying start with the first goal coming in the 5th minute scored by Allwyn Vaz. Two minutes later, Baggio Fernandes increased the lead. Allwyn added his second goal just before the halftime whistle.
Post resumption, Our Lady of Health went into an attacking mode and their first chance came through a free-kick but Roanal Gaunkar’s kick just sailed over the rival goal post.
Ashwin Fernandes finally broke the deadlock when he scored from a close range to reduce the deficit. But their happiness was short-lived after Melborn Pereira penetrated through the rival defence and scored the fourth goal for Pope John.
Allwyn scored his third goal after a delightful pass to complete his hat trick. Veliston Dias added more misery to the rivals by scoring a goal after coming from the bench.
The next quarter-final will be played on Saturday between St. Joseph’s Educational Institute, Chandor and Bethany Convent HS, Sao Jose de Areal, at 4 p.m.
