SIRLIM: Ambelim Sports Club defeated St Anthony’s Sports Club, Assolda, 2-0 to enter the quarter-finals of 24th Our Lady of Merces all- Goa inter-village football at Chinchinim church ground, Sunday. Ambelim led 1-0 at the break.
Ambelim took the lead in the 8th minute from a free kick by Arvind Fernandes. Thereafter, Assolda tried their best to level terms, but in vain. On the other side, Ambelim’s Blasco Fernandes’ power-packed right footer sailed over the crossbar just before the half time whistle.
In the second half, Assolda stepped up their attacking prowess to level terms but a power-packed left footer by Ashwin Pinto in the 60th minute gave no chance to the rival goalkeeper.
Ambelim’s second goal gave advantage to them enabling them to make several forays into the rival territory but the Assolda defence thwarted all their moves.
Referee Rosario Fernandes cautioned Fayden Pereira of Assolda and Perryson Fernandes of Ambelim for dangerous play.
