Ambelim Sports Club advanced into the quarter-finals of 33rd St Joseph festival football tournament organised by Dramapur Sports Club with a 2-1 win over Candolim Sports Club in an exciting pre quarter-final encounter at Dramapur ground, on Saturday.
The match was evenly poised with both teams trying to outsmart each other in the opening session.
Romeo Fernandes put Ambelim ahead in the 10th minute as he picked up the ball from his own half and unleashed a volley which gave no chance to the rival goalkeeper.
Stung by the reverse, Candolim tried their best and came close in levelling the score but their forwards frittered away easy scoring chances.
Candolim put up a better display in the second session and created many positives moves. Francis Rebello equalised with a pile driver.
With the match heading for the tie-breaker, Romeo of Ambelim struck the match-winner in the dying minutes.
Earlier Bernard Rebello, proprietor of Rebello Medical Stores, Margao, who was the chief, declared the tournament open.
