Angulo rescues Gaurs

PANJIM: FC Goa continue to depend on Igor Angulo for goals as the Spaniard scored a brace on Wednesday including the last-gasp winner in their 2-1 win over Jamshedpur FC in the Indian Super League at Tilak Maidan, Vasco.

Angulo first scored the equaliser from the penalty spot in the 64th minute before heading home the winner in the stoppage time. Jamshedpur had taken the lead in the 33rd minute through Stephen Eze.

Gaurs coach Juan Ferrando made two changes in the side as Princeton Rebello and Ivan Gonzalez started the game.

The Gaurs, like usual, enjoyed maximum possession in the first half having recorded double the passes to that of their opponents. But lacked the final third approach. In their entire first half they failed to test the rival keeper with Ortiz’s effort just before the break being the only shot on target.

The Gaurs conceded at the half hour mark from a set piece. Stephen Eze made his presence felt in the box when he stretched full to score with an outside foot finish to guide in an Aitor Monroy’s freekick.

FC Goa’s Ortiz and Brandon did create chances in the first half but they hardly tested the keeper.

In the second half, FC Goa were clearly the better side, though JFC were unlucky to be denied twice by the cross bar.

JFC nearly doubled the lead at the restart but Nawaz’s brilliant save kept his side in the game. Isaac Vanmalsawma found Jackichand Singh and the former FC Goa played a first time pass to Aniket Jadhav. The winger got on his comfortable position and pulled the trigger but an alert Nawaz did well to deflect the ball over the bar.

At the other end, Angulo missed a chance to put his side back into the game when he was set through on goal by Romario Jesuraj, but the former failed to keep his composure and blasted his shot wide.

But the Gaurs were awarded a penalty when Alexandre Lima brought down James Donachie in the box. Angulo stepped up and scored with a clean finish, sending the keeper in the wrong direction.

Nerijus Valskis and Lima — both were denied by the cross. First Valskis saw his direct freekick come off the post and then it was Lima, whose shot hit the crossbar and came from inside the goal, but the referee didn’t notice the bounce and the play continued.

Just when it looked like the teams were sharing the points, Angulo scored his eighth goal of the campaign with a header to seal three points.
