MARGAO: A fine all round display by skipper Anish Mhaddolkar (4 for 34 and 45 not out) enabled Borda RCC to get better of a fighting Ponda RCC by four wickets in the quarter-finals of the late Saurabh Sardessai tournament U-16, at Chicalim, on Saturday.
Opting to field first the Ponda batsmen recovered fast after negotiating a drying pitch and ended at 167 all out in 40.5 overs. Viraj Lad (78) played an excellent knock but did not get support from other batsmen except Suraj (17). Leg spinner Subav Borkar and Aniruddh Bhat snapped two wickets while Tushar Kudnekar took one.
The Borda batsmen made heavy weather of the smallish total and were soon in trouble at 60 for 4. But Anish built a partnership of 42 with Sanath Prabhudesai (17) and an unbeaten 48 runs with Pushpadeep Kossambe (19 not out) and overhauled the Ponda total losing six wickets, in the 42nd over. Rohan took two wickets while Prathamesh, Saideep, Nizam and Ashwin scalped one each.
