A brace from Anslem D’Souza was not enough to stop Sirsaim Welfare Club overcoming St. Christopher Sports Club, Tivim 4-2 in GFA’s 3rd Division at St. Christopher ground, Tivim on Monday. The score was 1-1 at the lemon break.
The match was a close encounter until the 64th minute; when St Christopher goalkeeper Ramesh Kurtadkar was sent off for handling the ball outside the box and this enabled Sirsaim to score two in the last ten minutes.
In the 10th minute, against the run of play, St Christopher’s Anslem D’Souza half-volleyed the ball to put them one up. A long clearance from Sirsaim goalkeeper, Worrel D’souza eventually reached the feet of Floyd Fernandes who delicately edged the ball past the St Christopher custodian to bring Sirsaim level in the 26th minute.
Just before half time, Sirsaim had a goal disallowed as the ball had gone out of play on the wing. The referee had initially awarded the goal to Shane Temudo but backtracked his decision after seeing his assistant who was on his blindside waving his flag firmly up.
In the 62nd, Sirsaim’s Shane Temudo smashed home a cross from the right side which was superbly delivered in by teammate Kenny Dias.
Within a minute, St Christopher got their equaliser through Anslem, who shot into the near post from close range in a packed 6-yard box.
In the 64th, Jayson D’Souza came in as a replacement goalkeeper at the expense of Panna D’Souza, after Ramesh saw red.
Jayson pulled in some impressive saves, much to the delight of his bench. Eventually Sirsaim broke through, when Sameer Sawant intercepted a loose ball in the box and finished into an empty net.
In the last minute, Mahesh Kambli punted in to make it 4-2 for Sirsaim.
In another match at St Anthony’s church ground, Siolim, Football Club of Siolim defeated Cunchelim Sports Club 2-0. Melroy netted in the 37th and Sonu Halmanker scored two minutes before the end.
