Anson’s brace sinks Curtorim Gymkhana

RAIA: Striker Anson D’Souza netted a fine brace as Candolim Sports Club downed Curtorim Gymkhana 2-0 to enter the last four of Jaju Memorial Trophy Football tournament at St. John de Baptist ground, Dando-Benaulim, Monday.

Curtorim were a disjointed lot throughout the match with only midfielder Nickson Castanha providing the sparkle.

Candolim midfielders Aniket Naik and Rajat Chopdekar worked tirelessly to gain control of the proceedings and they deservedly went ahead in the 26th minute when the Curtorim defense failed to intercept a high ball from Sanket Jotkar. Unmarked Anson easily nodded in past rival goalkeeper Johnson Bhogot.

Curtorim showed some glimpses of a comeback and almost got the equaliser but Nilester Silveira’s shot from a yard out struck Candoilm defender Melvin Lobo and bounced over the crosspiece.

Nickson and Milagres Fernandes made some forays for Curtorim but their striker Joy Hilario was unable to get a clear look at the goal. Besides, Candoilm stoppers Melvin and Bhavesh Candolkar put up a solid defence.

Candolim made the issue safe two minutes before close when Anson took a fine through pass from Aniket, cut past Rhys Dias and Johnson Bhogot and pushed into the empty net.
