Anurag wins silver in chess

PANJIM: Dempo goodwill ambassador IM Anurag Mhamal secured silver medal at Ideon Andron chess championships, in Greece, recently. Anurag scored seven points from nine rounds and remained undefeated in with five wins and four draws to his name.

Anurag participated in three tournaments in Greece and had a successful tour. He started with 6th International Rethymno Chess, thereafter he played in 7th Paleochora International tournament. 
In the process, Anurag defeated two GM’s, Svetushkin Dmitry (2557) of Maldova and GM Pap Misa (2514) of Serbia. He drew with GM Mirzoev Azer (2554) of Azerbaijan, GM Antic Dejan (2479) of Serbia, GM Rychagov Andrey (2553) of Russia, GM Borovikov Vladislav (2556) of Ukraine, GM Abhijit Gupta (2634) of India and got the better of IM Prasanna Rao (2454) of India and drew with IM N Srinath (2419) of India, IM Lekic Dusan (2433) of Montenegro and IM Swapnil Dhopade (2421) of India. He gained 37 elo points from all these tournaments.
Anurag, Goa’s top and highest rated player, is the only International Master from Goa and is aiming for a GM title which is the highest title in chess. He already has one GM norm to his credit. Though he could not achieve his GM norm on this tour he is positively looking forward to reach 2500 elo points which is the requirement for the title.
Anurag said that he missed the opportunity of achieving norm even after getting a good start in the tournaments but he is quite satisfied with his performance. Anurag arrived in Goa, on Friday.
