Sao Jose de Areal Sports Club booked a semi-final berth in 14th Benaulim Villagers football tournament organised by Dando Boys with a 5-2 victory via the tie-breaker over Sai Avtar Sports Club, Anjuna at Dando ground, Benaulim on Thursday. Sao Jose de Areal were trailing 0-1 at half time.
Sai Avtar forged ahead in the 17th minute when Gaurish Mandrekar unleashed a volley from the left off a through pass from Rosario Rebello.
Changing over, Sao Jose de Areal, desperate for an equalizer, repeatedly raided the rival citadel. Their efforts were rewarded when striker Freddy Olveira brilliantly headed a floater from Fredrick Eendro.
Spurred by the equalizer, Sao Jose de Areal were foiled from scoring the match-winner when Polly Valadares try hit the crossbar much to the dismay of Sao Jose de Areal supporters.
In the ensuing tie-breaker, Sao Jose de Areal scored through Freddy Olveira, Mario Rebello, Fredrick Eendro and Daisy Olveira while Iranni Fernandes was the lone scorer for Sai Avtar.
