CALANGUTE: Arpora Sporting Club overcame Guirim Youth and Cultural Club 2-1 to lift the 12th Apora-Nagoa Panchayat Cup All-Goa inter-village football tournament organized by Arpora Sporting Club at Salt Lake ground, Arpora, Sunday.
Hosts Arpora got off to a dream start as they went into the lead in the 10th minute with Babloo powerfully heading past Guirim goalkeeper Mandarao.
Spurred by the success, Arpora consolidated their lead in the 23rd minute after Savio Pereira finished with an adroit placement off a clever through ball from Saish Palyekar.
Guirim tried hard to get back into the game and their forwards fought back to reduce the margin in the 45th minute through Yogesh.
In the dying minute, Arpora defenders did a fine job to restrain the rival attacks.
Chief guest, Srinivas Dempo gave away the trophies to the winners and runners-up in presence of Benjamin Silva, MLA; Michael Lobo MLA; Sushma Nagvekar, sarpanch, Arpora-Nagoa panchayat; Joseph Fernandes, Dy sarpanch, Arpora-Nagoa; Panchas Roshan Redkar, Agostinho D’Souza and Mrs. Mahima Korgaonkar; GFA executive members Babli Mandrekar and Uday Lingudkar and other dignitaries.
Following individual prizes were awarded: Best Forward Gaurish Naik, Arpora; Best Midfielders Govind, Guirim and Saish Palyekar, Arpora; Best Defender Prashant, Guirim; Player of the tournament Savio Pereira, Arpora.
Earlier, the chief guest and dignitaries were introduced to the teams and match officials by Salim Sayyed, president, Arpora SC and Babli Mandrekar, secretary, Arpora SC.
