Asmita emerges chess champ

PANJIM: Asmita Ray of Mormugao Taluka won the Shripad and Anusuya Kamat Tarcar Memorial Women’s State Chess Championship/Selections 2024 conducted at the Mahalaxmi Vachan Mandir Hall, Mala, here, recently.

There was a fierce battle among the players till the last round. Asmita was half point down while playing with Tanvi Hadkonkar in the last round but outplayed overnight leader Tanvi to lift the championship. Asmita had recently played in World Junior Chess Championship held at Gujarat. She scored 6 points from 7 rounds.

From second to seventh scored equal 5.5 points each but on tie-break, WCM Gunjal Chopdekar finished second, while Tanvi Hadkonkar stood third. Other prize winners from fourth to seventh are Rachel Pereira, WCM Swera Braganca, Lyia Silveira, Shriya Patil.

Eight to tenth Alana Andrade, Sani Gawas and Saeeja Dessai scored 5 points each.

Category prize winners in the U-7, U-9, U-11, U-13 and Best Tiswadi are Shaurvi Kankonkar, Amaira Borkar, Avani Sawaikar, Shinel Rodrigues, Diya Sawal, Asmi Terse, Vaishnavi Parab, Navya Narvekar, Pradnya Kakodkar and Sayuri Nasnodkar.

The tournament was supported by Chaitanya Tarcar in memory of his father and mother. 

The first four players selected will represent the State at Nationals to be held at Tamil Nadu from October 3 to 13.

Chief guest Chaitanya Tarcar distributed the prizes in the presence of Narayan Pednekar, Ashesh Keni,  Dattaram Pinge, Arvind Mhamal, Satyawan Harmalkar, Pallavi Kakodkar, Atish Angle and others.
