Assonora Utd lift Late Pio Jose Goveia Memorial Cup

COLVALE: Assonora United sports club had to wait for the penalty shootout before they got the better of CDJ Ribandar by 6-4 margin via tiebreaker, to lift the 14th all Goa Late Pio Jose Goveia Memorial Cup, organised by YSC Colvale, played at Colvale Church grounds, on Friday.

In a well contested final, the teams were locked in a 1-1 draw, at the end of the regulation time.

Both the goals came in the first session of play.

It was in the 23rd minute of play that Assonora United drew the first blood with Prajot Naik scoring from an adroit placement, 1-0.

Ribandar colts exerted pressure on the rival citadel and in the 32nd minute Mozzan Shaik found the equaliser, scoring from inside the penalty box, 1-1.

On crossing over both the teams did have scoring opportunities but the defence seemed unbeatable, where the winners had to be decided via the penalty shootout.

Assonora United players kept cool and won the match via tie-breaker by 5-3 margin.

Aman Lotlikar was the chief guest and Rev Fr Arlino D’Mello was the guest of honour, who presented the winners cash prize of Rs 1,00,000 plus rolling trophy to Assonora United, while CDJ Ribandar had to be content with Rs 50,000.

Santan Ferrrao compared the finals while Adv Dominic Pereira proposed the vote of thanks.
