PANJIM: In an initiative to promote athletics at grassroots level in the State, the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG) in collaboration with the Goa Athletic Association (GAA) organized a 10-day Young Beginners Athletics Programme from December 15-26, 2014, at Campal and Fatorda grounds. A total of 50 young aspiring athletes were shortlisted and trained at the venues.
The programme aimed to hunt young talent in the age group of 7-12 years in developing their basic agility and fitness training skills by introducing them to sprinting/running, jumping and throwing events.
The team of athletic coaches carried out fun filled training sessions for the young budding athletes including Sprint shuttle relays, rope skipping, ladder running, cone agility exercises, medicine ball target throwing etc.
Suresh Kumar conducted sessions in Yoga and SAG nutritionist Priya Dhume guided the trainees in proper nutrition for beginners.
The programme was carried out by coaches Devi Gaonkar, Patrick Soares, Snehal More, Shashi Kumar and coordinated by Steffi Cardozo (APO, Athletics).
Bruno Coutinho, Joint Director Coaching of SAG presented the participation certificates to the athletes and them to take up sports.
