SANGOLDA: Bardez Veterans beat Albert Developers by a narrow 1-0 win to clinch the Monte de Guirim Platinum Jubilee trophy organised by Monte de Guirim Past Pupils Association, at Sangolda Panchayat ground, recently.
Bardez with Bruno Coutinho spraying passes for his strikers from midfield had a slight edge but Augustine Rodrgues and Pascoal Pereira could not find a way past the rival keepr Glorio D’Mello.
However, there was nothing Glorio could do when an opportunistic header from of a cross laid by Alexander took and awkward deflection of a defender and lodged into the nets for what later turned out to be the lone match winning goal.
Crossing over, Merces Veterans put in all their efforts in search of an equaliser.
However, the good work in the midfield by Shekar Shirodkar and some fine runs on the flanks by Sunder Raut were fizzled out before causing any trouble for Jude Fernandes in the Bardez goal. Alwyn Fernandes the scorer of the match winner for Bardez was awarded the Man-of-the-Match. Augustine Rodrigues of Bardez the highest scorer of the tournament with eight goals was awarded the Golden Boot trophy. The winners received a cash prize of Rs.25,000 and the runners-up Rs.15,000 apart from the trophies. Jayesh Salgoancar, Minister for Housing and Rural Development was the Chief Guest and gave away the awards along with Guest of honor Fr Waldhiem Rodrigues, Provincial of the St. Anthony’s Capuchin Province, Goa , Fr Romeo Fernandes, Headmaster and Steve D’Souza, Vice President of Monte de Guriim PPA.
