MARGAO: Bethany Convent High School, Sao Jose de Areal defeated St Joseph’s Educational Institute, Chandor 5-4 via the tie-breaker to storm into the semi-finals of Fr Peter SVD Memorial football tournament, organized by SVD Seminary at SVD Seminary ground, Raia, Saturday.
The score was 1-0 at lemon break. In a pulsating match, Bethany Convent got off to a promising start with Amit Bharati giving them the lead in the 3rd minute. St Joseph kept on attacking but were denied by the disciplined defence of Bethany Convent.
Changing over, the teams tried hard for the goal. Bethany Convent almost got the second goal through Shelton Fernandes but his shot just missed the goal by a whisker. St Joseph finally got the equaliser through Leno D’Sa.
Stunned by the equaliser, Bethany Convent went all out for the winner but the rival’s defence kept them at bay.
In the tie-breaker, Shelton Fernandes, Delton Colaco, Sezwin Fernandes and Larryl Mascarenhas converted for the winners. For St Joseph, Darren Fernandes, Gary D’Costa and Joy Hilario scored whereas Keshav Giri and Stalen Fernandes missed out.
