MARGAO: A splendid brace by captain Shelton Fernandes enabled Bethany Convent High School, Sao Jose de Areal crush St Rita’s High School, Maina 4-1 and romp into the final of All-Goa U-15 Petlu’s Gold and Diamond Trophy inter-school football tournament organized by Petlu’s and Sons,Varca at Varca grounds on Saturday. Bethany Convent led 1-0 at the breather.
Bethany Convent started the game in a whirlwind fashion with Shelton Fernandes harassing the rival defence with speed and pot shots. Bethany Convent rocked the rival citadel as early as the 10th minute when Delton Colaco punished the rival goalkeeper with a snap shot.
The early goal boosted the morale of the Bethany Convent players as they bulldozed the rival rearguard with well orchestrated raids. St Rita’s were struggling to keep up with the brisk pace of rampaging rival forwards.
The second session continued in the same vein with Bethany Convent forwards swarming all over the rival territory. Shelton Ferandes who was fulcrum of the attacks struck twice to register his brace. Larrel Mascarenhas inflated the tally when he banged home from close range.
After taking the 4 goal lead, Bethany Convent played at a leisurely pace and allowed their opponents to launch attacks. Jovlan Fernandes scored a consolation goal late in the second half with thumping header.
Bethany Convent High School, Sao Jose de Areal will now meet Fr Agnel Multipurpose High School, Verna in the final on March 3.
