BENAULIM: CAC Cansaulim entered the quarter-finals after registering a narrow 1-0 win over St Sebastian UC Benaulim in the St Sebastian Union Club Benaulim Cup football tournament, played at St John the Baptist ground, Benaulim, on Monday.
CAC Cansaulim started the match on the frontfoot.
In the very 4th minute, midfielder Veegan Ferrao found Domnic Soares inside St Sebastian box but the rival defender Rody Fernandes tackled his move.
Minutes later Veegan connected the ball to Richard Rodrigues, but the latter shot hit the St Sebastian cross bar and went out of play.
At the other end, St Sebastian almost scored the goal when Nicholas Rodrigues ran down the left flank before tried his luck from distance but much to his dismay, his shot missed the target by whiskers.
CAC medio Veegan, who was impressive in the opening minutes of the game, provided the assist to his team’s only goal in the 13th minute.
Veegan Ferrao sent in a through ball to Richard Rodrigues, who on receiving the ball dribbled past Vellesly Afonso of St Sebastian and scored past the helpless keeper, 1-0.
As the match progressed, St Sebastian tried to equalise through Faizel Bepari but the lad shot wide. Elvis Barretto’s shot for St Sebastian failed to find the mark too.
After much pressing, St Sebastian almost equalised when Rody met Faizel’s corner kick but the former’s towering header came off the cross bar in the final minutes of the game.
