Calangute Assn in semis

CALANGUTE: Hosts Calangute Association edged past FC Siolim 6-4 via penalties after being held to a 1-1 draw to move into semi-finals of Mc Dowell’s No.1 Yaari Premier Cup inter-village football tournament, at Calangute Association ground, Calangute, Monday.

CALANGUTE: Hosts Calangute Association edged past FC Siolim 6-4 via penalties after being held to a 1-1 draw to move into semi-finals of Mc Dowell’s No.1 Yaari Premier Cup inter-village football tournament, at Calangute Association ground, Calangute, Monday.
Both the teams played an attacking match creating a couple of goal scoring opportunities.  
Calangute Assn enjoyed a slight edge in the first half but their forwards failed to find the mark.  Aniket failed to intercept a pass by Deep Govekar off a Pedro Gonsalves free kick.  
Calangute Assn forwards Aniket and Ashley missed a couple of gilt edge chances while Sahil and Joel tries missed the mark narrowly for FC Siolim. 
At the stroke of half time, Calangute Assn almost took the lead but Pedro Gonsalves header hit the cross bar and went out of play much to the dismay of Calangute fans off a Blake Haldankar cross.
After being held to a goalless draw at half time, Calangute Assn took the lead in the 45th minute of play.  Calangute Assn were awarded a free kick just above the box which was  converted by Pedro Gonsalves beating the rival keeper.  
Trailing by a goal, FC Siolim went all out in search of the equaliser and came close to drawing level but Gopal shot wide off the mark from close.  
FC Siolim keeper saved a couple of tries from Ashley and Aniket.  
Hardworking Joel Fernandes finally put FC Siolim on level terms shooting home a Sahil cross beating the rival keeper in the 62nd minute of play.  
With scores even, the winners were decided on penalties; Pedro Gonsalves, Rajkumar Naik, Ashley Lobo, Joaquim Gonsalves and Sarvanand Korgaonkar were on target for Calangute while Joel Fernandes, Prahlad Mandrekar and Aldridge Fernandes converted for Siolim.  Joel Fernandes of FC Siolim was adjudged the man-of-the-match.
