MAPUSA: Calangute Association Sports Club scored two second half goals to register a 2-0 win over Panjim Footballers in the ninth round match of the Goa Professional League organised by Goa Football Association under floodlights, played at Duler stadium, here on Wednesday.
It was a great disappointment for many of the Calangute supporters as they could not witness today’s match as the fixtures was not announced.
Calangute Association started on a promising note after their last league match win against Corps of Signals by 2-0 margin.
While at the other end, Panjim Footballers having lost their last match against Sporting Clube de Goa by 4-1 margin managed to hold their opponents to a goalless draw in the first session.
Both the coaches played a foreigner each in their starting line-up as Calangute coach Alex Alvares fielded Kouame M. Joseph in the defence, while Panjim Footballers coach Savio Vaz fielded Alphonse Shako in midfield.
The first session was mostly restricted to midfield with a couple of attacks from both the teams in between.
Panjim keeper Gurpreet Singh made saves to deny Leslee Britto and Dominic Fernandes from scoring.
At the other end, Panjim Footballers who showed in patches had just one good attempt at the goal where a cross by Mahesh Kumar from the left flank saw keeper Jaison D’Mello leap high to collect the ball in the process injured himself and later was replaced by Sumit Das in the goal.
On resumption of play, Calangute’s Omkar More came from the bench the tempo of the attack was on the uphill for the beach boys.
In the 50th minute Omkar who was a thorn in the Panjim defence managed to get hold of a miss clearance from defender Schubert D’Costa and entering the 18-yard box finished with an adroit placement, 1-0.
It was once again keeper Gurpreet who came up with a breath taking save to deny Dominic Fernandes from scoring in one-to-one situation.
Omkar almost netted his second goal, but was timely thwarted by keeper Gurpreet in one-to-one situation.
Calangute doubled their lead in the 65th minute when a corner by Dominic was poorly anticipated by keeper Gurpreet to find Nigerian Kouame M. Joseph nod the ball into the goal to make it 2-0.
The Capital side tried their best to get back into the game but failed to finish the chances which they had created.
