Calangute Association lift Bardez Cup

Hot favourites Calangute Association prevailed over Candolim Sport Club 9-8 via the sudden death in the finals to lift the 4th Bardez Cup inter-village football tournament organised by United Club of Nerul at Dr. Gustavo Monteiro Stadium, Candolim on Sunday.
Candolim began the proceedings on a bright note but Roy Das failed to find hit the target in the 5th minute with the Calangute defense off guard. Candolim again came close to scoring in the 20th minute but a good try by Joelif Simoes hit the post and rebound into play. In the closing minutes of the first half, a Bruno free kick was brilliantly saved by the Candolim keeper.
Changing over, Candolim shot into the lead in the 11th minute through Joelif Simoes who headed home a Wenseslav Rebello free kick. Stung by the reverse, Calangute fought back and could have restored parity in the very next minute but Audumber failed to capitalise a Bruno free kick.
Calangute finally found the equaliser in the 60th minute when Blake chested the ball off Bruno and slot it past Candolim keeper Morje.
In the penalties, Calangute kept their nerves to beat Candolim 8-7 on sudden death. Cliff Fernandes, Bruno Coutinho, Francis Fernandes, Sherwin Lobo, Samir Chodankar, Agnelo Fernandes, Sanju Korgaokar and Vijay Parsekar converted for Calangute while Samir Naik, Shankar Palienkar, Joelif Simoes, Stan Souza, Kliebber D’Souza, Jose Lopes and Sagar Bathkande were on target for Candolim.
Agnelo Fernandes, Calangute MLA was the chief guest. The prizes were given away by the guest of honour, Agnelo D’Souza, sarpanch, Nagoa-Arpora in the presence of Anand Shettigar, sarpanch, Candolim, Alex Fernandes, sarpanch, Calangute, GFA members Alirio Lobo, Babli Mandrekar, Uday Lingudkar and Francis Fernandes, ex-GFA. 
Calangute pocketed Rs 30,000 while Candolim had to be content with the runners-up trophy and Rs 20,000.
Following individual prizes were given: Best Half Joelif Simoes (Candolim). Best forward Sagar Bathkande (Candolim). Best defender Samir Chodankar (Calangute). Best goalkeeper Agnelo Fernandes (Calangute). Special prizes for Hansen D’Souza and Russel Fernandes (UC Nerul).
