MAPUSA: Host Calangute Association got the better of Carmona Sports Club 2-0 to enter the final of 2nd Goan Heritage Cup All-Goa inter-village football tournament at Poriat ground, Calangute, Tuesday.
The winners led 1-0 at half time. The home team surged ahead in the very second minute through Charles Cardozo.
Charles found himself in an ideal position but was brought down at the edge of the box by Carmona SC’s Alex Rodrigues.
Off the resultant free-kick, Charles displayed good technique to loft the ball above the rival six-man wall, giving Carmona SC keeper no chance. Carmona were optimistic but their strikers couldn’t give them the equalizer before the break.
However, the teams were reduced to ten-men each as Calangute’s Blake Haldankar and Carmona SC’s Edsel Rodrigues exchanged blows and were shown the direct red card by match referee Celvin Fernandes.
Post resumption, Carmona were wasteful in front of goal and conceded a needless penalty with ten minutes to go for the final whistle after Orwil Matos handled the ball inside the danger zone.
Pedro Gonsalves stepped up for the spot-kick and made no mistake. Calangute will await the result of the second semi-finals between Candolim SC and United Club of Nerul, scheduled to play on Wednesday. The finals will be played on Sunday.
