MAPUSA: A second half goal by Charles Cardozo was enough as host Calangute Association registered a solitary goal victory to pip PVC Parra and advance into the semi-finals of 2nd Goan Heritage Rolling football trophy organized by Calangute Association at Poriat grounds, Calangute, Wednesday.
Parra had the first chance but Joaquim Pacheco’s inside the box effort was blocked at goal line by Calangute’s Joaquim Cardozo. Then onwards, the host got into a rhythm and controlled the proceedings as striker Blake Haldankar’s stiff grounder went inches wide.
Minutes later, Blake was gifted another opportunity after Parra keeper Clifton Fernandes couldn’t keep out Pedro Gonsalves’ free-kick. The ball made its way to Blake, who however ballooned over from hand-shaking distance.
Changing over, Charles missed a golden opportunity in a one-to-one situation but the striker soon made amends by heading in past the onrushing rival keeper, 1-0. Parra tried hard to equalize but their opponents defended bravely.
