BENAULIM: Calangute Veterans registered a hard fought 2-1 win over Real Benaulim Veterans to move into the semi-final of the 1st Monti Trophy Veterans soccer tournament, organised by United Boys of Monte-Benaulim, at Monti grounds, Benaulim, on Thursday.
Benaulim steadied the proceedings and surged ahead in the 14th minute when Mohamad Bepari passed to Steve Furtado who scored past rival keeper. After the break, Calangute restored parity in lucky circumstances. Pratap Sawant’s flag kick was headed strongly by Rafiq which struck Benaulim defender and went in. The goal ruffled Benaulim; Calangute pressed harder and got the winner a minute before the final whistle when a long aerial ball of Martin Parish slipped off the hands of Benaulim keeper Coinsu and fell at the feet of Pratap Sawant who tapped the ball in the nets to give Calangute Veterans a 2-1 win.
