SINQUETIM: Campal Veterans secured a hard-fought 5-4 penalty shoot-out win (2-2 fulltime) against Guirdolim Chandor Veterans to set a semi-final meeting against Bardez Veterans in the Above 50 competition of the GVFC Football, at the Sinquetim ground, on Monday.
With scores level at 2-2 after full-time, it was goalkeeper Yeshwant Parab who came to Campal’s rescue as he saved Charles D’Silva’s penalty and ensured they advance to the semifinals.
With Osvaldo da Costa giving a good account of himself on the Guirdolim Chandor Veterans goal, it was the South Goa side who opened the scoring at the fag end of the first half after goalkeeper Yeshwant Parab spilled a shot from Theophilo Dias.
The Campal Veterans came roaring in the second half as they first drew level and then took the lead within two minutes of the re-start.
First, it was Ponttes Anthony who nodded in a free kick and then Francis Dias who went past the goalkeeper Osvaldo da Costa and booted home to give Campal the lead for the first time.
However, their joy and the lead didn’t last long as Trevor Antao slipped one past Parab to equalise 2-2.
Both teams went all out for a match-winner that proved to be elusive till the end.
Vasco Veterans will now meet Chinchinim Veterans in the last quarter-final of the Above 50 competition, on Tuesday.
